When you're in a long distance relationship, finding activities that give you the same closeness as being on a real life date is something to be treasured. Recreating this, however, isn't always very easy. It's very difficult not being next to each other to gauge the person's instant reaction to something you've said or a situation that has occurred. In many LDRs (long distance relationships) communication is relayed instead of being instant. For an LDR to work well, you need to establish many varieties of communication. With this in mind, we're introducing a monthly date night specifically for long distance relationships. Each month's activity will focus on bringing "real life" everyday activities to the relationship in a new and fun way.
To kick off our date night series, we're starting with an activity that encompasses all of the important aspects a relationship needs to thrive: instant communication, fun, and real time together. So, get your computers out and let's explore the world of online gaming.
Nearly every multi-player online game has some form of chat option, making this activity high on our list of dates you should do with your long distance partner. Role-playing type games also offer a variety of customization options which gives you a deeper glimpse into your partner's tastes. Playing games with someone also provides you with an excellent opportunity to see how your partner's mind works, how they react to certain situations, whether they are extremely competitive, how they handle teamwork, etc. There aren't many other activities that give you all this while having fun and feeling closer to your partner.
Getting Started:
Your first step is to find a game you'd both like to play. There are a multitude of options and what you choose will ultimately depend on both of your personal preferences.
If you enjoy role-playing games you could give World of Warcraft, Warhammer Online, Lord of the Rings Online or MapleStory a try. For more ideas, try entering "mmorpg" in a search engine. Also note, most of the games above, except MapleStory, have a monthly fee. However, they all offer free trials so you can determine if it is a good fit for you both.
For classic and board games, try sites like Yahoo! Games, MSN Games or Heavy Games. You can also do a search for "online multiplayer games" for other ideas.
If you both have an Xbox 360 and Xbox Live accounts, you can play many games (including downloadable Arcade games) together while using their voice chat system.
Keeping It Romantic:
When you're apart, candlelight and wine aren't really going to work in quite the same way. However, there are a few things you can do to make things feel a little more together. For instance, creating a playlist that you both listen to at the same time while you play. Ordering or preparing the same meal can turn it into a dinner date as well. Most games offer some type of private messaging system. Periodically send your partner a romantic or loving message during your game time.
Additional Tips:
If your computer or internet connection isn't so great, you can still do this date night. Look for internet or gaming cafes in your area. You can use their computers on an hourly or daily fee.
Some games have significant download times. Make sure each person has the game installed and ready to play before the date night. That way you can reschedule or adapt this particular activity accordingly.
Have fun and enjoy your time together doing something new and different!
